Letter to the Editor: Points out omission from Social Security column

Dear Editor:

This is a response to “Social Security Matters” by AMAC Certified Social Security Advisor Russell Gloor, Association of Mature American Citizens – Article in Sunday, May 24, 2000 issue “Ask Rusty – What will my wife’s survivor benefit be?”

A very important part of your response was left out, which is the case in most social security questions. That is, if your spouse is a retired (or will retire) government employee, and she/he falls under the GPO/WEP bills/laws, she will receive no benefits from a deceased spouse’s social security benefit. This almost always comes as a surprise to the survivor and should be clarified when responding to questions like this “older husband” had.

Sincerely,

Peggy L. Snead

Manteo, N.C.
